Communication and codetermination culture in European organizations
“I’m the boss”, says an infuriated Chinese investor during one of our coaching sessions. “I’ve invested the money. So, I’m the one making the decisions! How is it possible for a so called worker’s council to just come along and deny me my earned right?” This is the reaction of a Chinese business executive after encountering the worker’s council of the German company he’d recently acquired for the first time. Granted: the concept of employee representation isn’t completely foreign to actors in the Chinese business environment. Yet, Chinese unions and worker’s councils possess much fewer rights and hold just a fraction the power to influence company decisions in comparison to their German, French or Dutch counterparts. Operating in Europe therefore demands of Chinese businesses to use different strategies and approaches to handle and work together with employee representations.
